Exhibition statement What does it mean to belong when history has scattered and displaced us?
"Girl in the Clouds" is an exploration of migration, identity, and belonging through the lens of personal and cultural history. The exhibition is a visual and sensory meditation on the intersections of two distinct identities: Herczeg’s Hungarian families migration to Australia and the forced displacement of her Aboriginal family. This exhibition invites viewers to step into the emotional landscapes of both past and present, where personal histories and ancestral memories converge.
Drawing from deep reflection and cultural research, Herczeg reveals the complexities of belonging—feeling at home in multiple places, while never truly at peace. The work captures moments of escape and introspection, like drifting away into the clouds, where the weight of history can be momentarily suspended. But even in these moments of detachment, the echoes of injustice and loss are never far behind. Herczeg’s voice calls for justice, not only for individual families but for entire communities whose stories have been overlooked or erased.
